Created By Kat began in late 2018. The idea was born when searching for clothing for my teenage daughter- morphed into mission impossible. We looked everywhere, we even resorted to browsing handmade markets. Even then could not find what she was after. I did find something though! A little spark in my head ignited and said “hey remember that dream you had? what happened?!” I started to think back to when I was a teenager and how I would create my own clothing. Never satisfied (must be a teenage girl thing huh? hmm) with the styles available in stores, I would check out how different styles were pieced together and then reinvent the style to how I wanted it to look.
I was never formally taught how to pattern make. It just came naturally, visualising how parts pieced together. I learnt how to sew by hand when I was still in single digits. I then moved on to machine sewing on my big sister’s Holly Hobby sewing machine shortly after. My Barbies’ were the best (and most originally) dressed in the neighbourhood! Fast forward to my teen years and I was taking every sewing course I could get my hands on. I went from wearing hand me downs, and Best and Less (nothing wrong with Best and Less!…..we still shop there today!) to wearing my own designs, and fighting off my sisters who loved to borrow my clothing. The dream of designing my own label was taking seed in my teenage head.
In a perfect story, it would have happened…..I would have gone on to design school and worked my way up. Lets just say dreams sometimes get sidetracked for MANY reasons. So here I was mid forties, a handful of career changes and a family later. It is NEVER too late to chase that little spark of a dream and give it a shot.
And so Created By Kat was born.
In the first year of trading I realised there was a demand for more than just clothes.
Bags, accessories, jewellery, giftware, homeware and arts were all items that customers were keen for a Created By Kat twist on. As anything of a creative nature is totally my jam, I decided to add these areas to the business. The demand for these items grew swiftly, so much so that they are now my biggest sellers!
